So I finally decided to break down and try out Fedora Core 5, after having
been away since FC2. The installation seemed to go pretty well. I was
putting it on my dual-core athalon, so I used the x86-64 DVD to install
from.
I was a little surprised by what ultimately got installed. A lot of extras
seemed to be lacking from my FC3 experiences, and I couldn't find a decent
system-admin gui (I forgot what I used for FC3, but Suse has YAST). The
updater (don't know what it's actually called; FC2 had up2date; Suse had
YOU) seemed to be broken after the initial update. When it broke, it didn't
tell you where to look or what to configure; it just went away.
I went as close as you can get to a 'defaults' install. I'm sure I added a
few more packages, but am sure I didn't intentionally leave anything out.
Is this experience standard for FC5? Did I do something wrong? Has anyone
out there had some FC5 experience?
