[CVALE] usb lp devices keeps dieing

Does any one have any helpful information or suggestions about the
following problem...

I have a debian sarge server running kernel 2.6.8.  This seems to be the
most recent kernel available in the standard repositories for sarge.  (I
can upgrade to etch to get a more recent kernel, if truly necessary).

An okidata dot matrix printer with a usb interface is attached to this
server.  Fairly often the usb device in linux just "dies"... cups says
that it does not exist and disables the printer.  Unplugging the device
and replugging it brings the device back to life and afterward the
printer must be reenabled in cups and printjobs from any remote machines
cancelled.

I need to eliminate the problem of the usb device being deactivated, so
that all the annoyance of the resulting procedure to get it back online
goes away.
