That's really, really old. No usbmon, usblp full of races...

I would extract the config from the Debian's 2.6.8 and give a try to
something where I took over usblp. 2.6.23-rc3 sounds good :-)

But honestly, I suspect your USB to parallel adapter is a goner.
I don't expect a dot-matrix printer to come with a built-in USB,
so try to replace the adapter.
