It means that a) driver has bugs, and b) without usbmon it's impossible

No, I meant rebuilding from the source. Once we have the issue
identified, we can retrofit the solution into the stock kernel
on Sarge. But in most cases you can just run newer kernels, they
are quite compatible. Udev is the only thing which may give you
trouble.
The trouble with Etch is, you aren't getting bleeding edge anyway,
so you'll end with whatever was there back then. I'm not well
versed in Debian though.
