There are several LUGs in the bay area, most notably BALUG and SVLUG.
I've heard good things about both, but never attended meetings or
looked at the mailing list for either.  (sadly, I live around the
corner from where SVLUG does their meetings...)

Both are good groups, and some of the brightest in the area attend.
SVLUG in particular have regular workshops and presentations from
professionals in the field.
