[CVALE] Corrupted Partition

Just a question. I had resized the Ubuntu partition with the use of
PartitionMagic from WinXP as I needed a few gigs of extra space
(temporary change) but then went to sleep while waiting (*early* AM).
The computer shut off in the mean time for lack of activity on my part,
now I have a corrupted partition.
I have downloaded a few live cd disks to boot from. Ubuntu Feisty and
Knoppix.
I can see the partition with "fdisk -l", listed it as number 6 in the
list and Knoppix on the live CD will even list the corrupted partition
on the desktop in Xwindows. But using fsck or e2fsck isn't helpful, I
only get error messages listed. I can't mount it. Can't 'look' into it
to recover some of the data. (Pictures of princesses , and no..not
backed up. Why would I be smart in that dept?)
Here are the questions: What next? What am I missing? Any ideas would
be helpful.
I am using my other box to use email as I can't/won't get email with
WXP. I *really* would like to recover the data before I wipe the
partition and start fresh. I don't mind reinstalling, but I do not want
to lose some of the data.
Thanks in advance
Jon
