     Thank you, Ian.  'grep "alias" /etc/*'  didn't turn up anything 
that looked like  the culprit either, so maybe it's in a profile dir 
like you've said.  I'm not used to this BSD format, and dealing with 
global shell profiles never came up in Debian.  Thanks.  I'll take a look.
