[CVALE] Question about Linux Networking Basics: Adding a Computer

About a year ago I bought my wife Monique a new computer. This meant
that I got to take the computer we replaced, a Compaq that is about 3 or
4 years old and make it my Linux computer. (I added some hardware to the
computer, like a DVD drive and a new hard drive.) I recently bought a
brand new computer for my Linux box, which meant Monique wanted me to
get rid of the Compaq. (She isn't real excited about the idea of me
taking over the living room with a bunch of computers that no one else
in the house can use.)
I boxed up the Compaq with the intention of giving it away, as any good
husband would do. Then I ran into a problem. It turns out most of my
friends and acquaintances weren't very interested in a 4 year old
computer that didn't have some flavor of Microsoft Windows installed,
even if I was giving it away for free.
I got tired of carrying the computer around in the cab of the pick-up.
(I couldn't let Monique see me bring it back inside.) :]
I decided to store the monitor, speakers and other accessories in my
tool shed. I took the computer back inside and slid it next to my new
computer. I thought I would try to learn a little about networking with
Linux by setting the Compaq up as "data storage" for my other Linux
computer and Monique's computer. (Why let that 180 GB computer go to
waste?)
I've got Monique's computer and my new Linux computer hooked up to a
router so that they can share an internet connection. I know that I need
to hook up the Compaq to the router as well, but I'm not sure what comes
next. I already have Linux installed on the Compaq. What changes do I
need to make to the Compaq so it can function in its new role? (I think
that I need to delete the regular user partition and change its domain
name. I was stupid and used the same domain name on my new computer that
I had originally used on the Compaq.)
What other steps will I need to take so that my new Linux computer can
"see" the file system on the Compaq? What will I need to do so that my
wife's computer can see the file system on the Compaq? (I thought about
making a large NTFS or FAT32 partition on the Compaq, but if I really
want to learn some networking stuff maybe I need to mess around with
Samba.)
I'm a little lost when it comes to networking, so I appreciate any
suggestions that can get me started with this project.
