From lblake at ksninc.com Mon Jun 23 13:25:39 2008 From: lblake at ksninc.com (Landon Blake) Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2008 13:25:39 -0700 Subject: [CVALE] Using a wireless router with my Windows and Linux boxes... Message-ID: <0D544207876CDA428F17DD7EA448C192CC2994@bailey.DOMAIN.KSNINC.PVT> I've got a question for the network gurus. I just moved into a new house. There isn't a phone jack even close to the bedroom we are using as a home office, and AT&T wants $150 to install a new phone jack in the bedroom. I was thinking I could install a wireless router so I wouldn't need the additional phone jack. The bonus to this is that I wouldn't have to plug-in my laptop to get internet! Here is the bad news: I'd have to install wireless network cards on both of my desktops. My computer runs Debian Linux, while my wife's computer is running Windows XP. I looked at the following wireless router (I'm using a regular LinkSys router on both desktop's currently.): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124010 I have no idea what to do for a wireless network card on the desktops. What I'd like to ask the fellow CVale members is this: - Can a rookie like myself handle the installation of a wireless router and wireless network card with a desktop that runs Debian Linux? - Is there a specific brand of wireless network card I will need for the Linux box? If it costs me $300 or $400 to go wireless I might just pay for the phone jack installation. Thanks for any advice and/or suggestions. Landon P.S. - I hope to be adding another computer to serve as a data backup for the Debian box in the next year. This will mean a small "home office network". Maybe this justifies the cost of going wireless? Warning: Information provided via electronic media is not guaranteed against defects including translation and transmission errors. What is the card that you want to install in the desktop? I have a belkin wireless card, run a linksys router and have no problems. Usually it is quite easy. Have faith in yourself! I have one in my old Presario running Ubuntu, and it is utterly reliable even in low- signal locations. ojs "I can think of only two industries that refer to customers as users. These small routers are not expensive top of the line CISCO routers and may require an occasional reboot but they work. I won't dispute Patrick's claim that Buffalo has a better router or that DD-WRT is more stable than the firmware that is delivered with the system. If you intend to replace the factory software with another Linux version the following may be helpful. It's been a couple of years since I played with the Linksys routers so my information may be dated. I stopped playing with the routers shortly after hardware version 5 had been released and before the open source replacements were as stable as I understand they are now. Below is the serial number ranges and hardware versions for the Linksys WRT54G. If you haven't opened the box and wish it to remain sealed for a return/replacement the serial number printed on the box will tell you the hardware version inside. http://wiki.openwrt.org/Faq#head-7f8992d2dcde57a6d89730aadfac304874e5d082 Linksys switched to VxWorks with hardware version 5. The WRT54GL model was essentially the Version 4 hardware with a Linux O/S. The only non-mail order place where I found the GL model was as Fry's (Fremont). I used to pick up the WRT54G models for $20-$25 on sale. I don't see them that cheap anymore. More information on the WRT54G at this link. http://wiki.openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs/Hardware/Linksys/WRT54G Note that OpenWRT and DD-WRT are separate projects. I didn't use either O/S but instead modified the original Linksys provided source to make my modifications. I found the OpenWRT site had useful information for my tinkering. Something to keep in mind if you're looking for wireless cards. Some of the older cards can be picked up cheaply (e.g. Netgear MA311) but may not have the horsepower/drivers to support WPA so you may be stuck with WEP for security. Don't buy too old of a card. Again whatever Linksys router you bought will work fine with your Linux/Windows/Mac desktop/laptops. It's just a matter of whether you want to experiment with different firmware in the router or not. You may want to look up the definition of "brick" as it relates to routers before you make that decision. Hi Landon, The Linksys models will work function fine for your purposes. If you haven't opened the box and wish it to remain sealed for a return/replacement the serial number printed on the box will tell you the hardware version inside. http://wiki.openwrt.org/Faq#head-7f8992d2dcde57a6d89730aadfac304874e5d08 2 Linksys switched to VxWorks with hardware version 5.
