From lblake at ksninc.com Mon Nov 3 11:57:33 2008 From: lblake at ksninc.com (Landon Blake) Date: Mon, 3 Nov 2008 11:57:33 -0800 Subject: [CVALE] Do I need to compile my own driver for Ralink Wireless Card? Message-ID: <0D544207876CDA428F17DD7EA448C192E47541@bailey.DOMAIN.KSNINC.PVT> I'm having some trouble getting the right driver installed in Ubuntu for my wireless network card. (The last time I installed Ubuntu the card was automatically recognized, this time it was not.) After a lot of poking around this weekend I realized that I need the card for the RT2561. However, when I go to the Ralink Linux page, it seems that only source code is available. Do I need to try to compile my own driver? (I'm not a very good C programmer, but I may be able to stumble trough it.) Does someone know where I can download a driver for this wireless card already compiled for an AMD64 processor? If I compile my own, would it do any good to offer it to other users on AMD64? Why wouldn't Ralink take the time to compile their drivers for the most common processors? Thanks for any info. Look at RH and other commercial distributions: they make their money off the services they provide in the server-end market. You won't make a huge profit from selling desktop versions of the software, but you can charge all you want for the services. If the services are good enough, you'll do just fine. The one thing I've come to learn in recent years is that there's a tool that's right for each job. Much of the time, Linux isn't it - especially on the desktop. This is a far cry from my attitude back in '98 when I first joined CVALE. BUT, I will say that in many cases, linux suits me just fine. I just don't expect it to work for my mum & dad like it works for me. Take that article how you will, but the man has a point. --Ian... Otherwise, you might want to look into the ndiswrapper package and use the XP drivers. --Ian...
